Assistant Attorney General/Special Assistant United States Attorney

This position will be embedded inside the U.S. Attorney's Office Kansas District, Asset Forfeiture (AF) Unit, in Wichita, Kansas.  This is a non-federal position and it does not confer status as a federal employee.  The selected applicant will be an employee of the Office of the Kansas Attorney General’s (OAG) as an Assistant Attorney General (AAG) position in the Civil Division.  In addition to being an AAG with the OAG, the position will carry the designation of Special Assistant United States Attorney.  This AAG position will be responsible for obtaining guidance and approval on the handling of assigned cases from OAG management.  The individual selected to fill this position will investigate facts to determine if forfeiture is appropriate; litigate cases involving the forfeiture of assets seized as proceeds of illegal activities and/or money laundering activity; assist with efforts to ensure that forfeited assets are restored to victims; and handle the civil forfeiture of assets used to facilitate illegal activity such as drug trafficking.  The position will maintain regular, accurate and complete reporting to the OAG on the status of asset forfeiture cases.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

• Research and draft pleadings and documents to be utilized in criminal proceedings to include, but not limited to: complaints, pre-trial motions, jury instructions, etc.
• Research, interpret and apply statutes, court decisions, or other legal authority on points of law
• Interview clients and witnesses
• Conduct legal research and writing
• Conduct depositions and other forms of discovery
• Conduct negotiations
• Prepare for the participate in hearings and trials (with and without a jury)
• Perform all other legal functions necessary to case development
• Over all case management
• Travel to Topeka for meetings with OAG staff members and travel to litigate cases

Licensing & Certification

• Certificate of admission and membership in good standing with the Bar of the Supreme Court of Kansas or eligible for admission on waiver (or Kansas Supreme Court Rules for Attorney Admissions – Rule 715)
• Admission to the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas and admission to (or eligible for admission to ) the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit
• A valid driver’s license

Minimum Qualifications

• Trial experience required
• Excellent writing, research and communication skills
• Strong proficiency in MS Office (Word, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat

Preferred Qualifications

• Jury trial experience
• Knowledge of asset forfeiture procedure
